An egg of a different color
Did you know chicken eggs come in various colors like white, brown, blue, or even green? The answer lies in the breed of the chicken! A chicken’s genetics dictate the color of the eggs it lays. For instance, Leghorn chickens are famous for their white eggs, while Rhode Island Reds and Plymouth Rocks typically lay brown eggs. On the other hand, breeds like the Araucana and Ameraucana are known for their stunning blue eggs, and Easter Eggers can produce a range of shades, including green and pink. The eggshell color is determined by pigments deposited during the egg's formation. Though the colors differ, the nutritional content and taste of the eggs remain the same, regardless of the shell's hue. So, the next time you see a carton of multicolored eggs, you’ll know it’s all thanks to the unique breeds of the hens that laid them!
